So this is a few little sections from our big world map on our wall at home that I got my Dad. A few people have been curious about it and I thought if you saw the idea it might be something you'd like to incorporate into your own family if you are a bunch like ours who loves travelling.
What I did was buy my Dad a nice big vintage map. Then I started to pin all the places anyone in our family (immediate family being Mum, Dad, Brother, Sister and of course myself too) in silver pins. Then I allocated a colour to each person and got little glass beads to put on the end of a pin where that person has been and repeated it for each individual. What you end up with is a map with different stacks of beads as you see above, where the family has been as a total and also track where individuals have been.
I thought I'd upload it before my world of travel ahead. My Dad is blue, Mum green, sister yellow, brother black and that leaves me with Red (but I like to think of it as a pinkish red, lol). Obviously these are just a few sections from the map. There are pins in Fiji and Asia and South America and some of Africa. I wasn't going upload a hundred different pictures. We also didn't include every little city/town just major ones so there wasn't a hundred pins in one spot.
My Dad loves it, and so does the rest of the family. Also nice considering our family is so wide-spread. My parents are both from Germany but met in Sydney then moved back to Germany, back to Sydney, then finally up to Brisbane. lol. I was born in Brisbane, my sister Sydney and my brother Hamburg. My sister now lives in Hamburg, I'm not sure where I'll end up, and my brother is about to embark of a 4WD trek around Australia by first driving to Kalgoorlie in Western Australia (which for those not in Australia is like driving from New York to Los Angeles but with ALOT less civilisation).
Anyway, that's more information than you all probably needed to know. I'd just like to say I'm also the youngest so I have more pins to come. Haha. All photos are taken with my Canon EOS 400D with a 4+ Macro Filter. There was no point taking a larger picture because you can't see the details of the pins and beads then which is the whole point. lol. xoxo
Oh, so many pins! I absolutely love this idea and I definitely hope to do this with my family, although we haven't travelled nearly as much as yours! Question: do you usually keep this map hanging on a wall or laying flat?
WAAAH - why have i not seen this before. You my dear are the greatest artistic representation of our country - like - ever. And I do not exaggerate. I have met very few people who are as artistically yalented and prolific as you. And I am so proud to point you out to fellow artists overseas and start grinning - going - she's an aussie too! yey! (although I shouldn't count myself as an artist really... >.>)
I had a similar idea for our travels and what not - i haven't found a properly sized world map yet. I dont even have a blank wall either - hmmmm.
But anyway this is such an awesome idea - you have once again inspired me and if it werent for my really dominant ass - which is really lazy - i would get started on this right away... or something. <3 <3 <3

WHOA, you're going to give me a big head. You're too kind, and I'm so glad you enjoy my work and ideas. Really means alot!
re: Looking for a good sized world map, I got my Dad's one off eBay. There were alot of "poster sized" ones on there in different designs. The one I ended up getting came from the U.S. and I think cost me under $20 including shipping. At least worth a look.
